A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with music by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, opened on Broadway in 1962 and closed after 964 performances. Nominated for eight Tonys, it won six—including Best Musical.
It has subsequently played throughout the world and was made into a movie with original cast members Zero Mostel and Jack Gilford. A recent revival starred Nathan Lane.
It is the story of the slave Psuedolus who, for his freedom, promises his young master Hero that he will get him a girl—Philia. In doing so he encounters Roman soldiers, courtesans and eunuchs, funerals and chases, and mistaken identities, all coming together in this farcical comedy.
