Move Out
We hope that you enjoyed your year with Residence Life. As we begin to plan for Move Out, students and families can use this website to make their plans. Information will be updated here once it is available for students.
Last Day to Move Out
All students living on campus must move out of their residence hall by Noon on Friday, May 16, 2025 or 24 hours after their last final, whichever occurs first.
Students must arrange travel plans so that they can depart the hall by noon on Friday, May 16. Extensions due to travel plans will not be approved. Students should work with families and other parties that will help them move to move out almost all of their items the weekend before move out, May 10 and 11. Then the student will only need to move out a small number of items when they need to move out during the week.
Graduating Seniors
If you are graduating, email reslife@buffalostate.edu and indicate you need an extension for graduation. If you have applied for graduation, your request will be approved. Please follow all instructions in the approval email for your move out.
Steps to Check Out
In order to check-out properly, students should:
Step 1: Pack and remove all personal belongings from your room.
Step 2: Go through your room and apartment and throw away all trash, including items from your fridge. This trash should be thrown away in the outside dumpster.
Step 3: Get a staff member from the front desk of your building (these will be staffed all through finals week).
Step 4: Review your room with the staff member.
Step 5: Turn in your key(s) to the staff member at the front desk.
Trash During Move Out
All students are encouraged to take trash out to the garbage dumpsters located outside the Residence Halls. While smaller trash items can still be left in the trash rooms, during move out these trash rooms are quickly overwhelmed. Taking trash out to the dumpster directly helps keep hallways clear and allows for people to move out easier.
Items Left Behind
Any items left in the residence hall rooms after the residence halls close or a student checks out of their room will be considered abandoned. These items will be removed from the room immediately. Students will only have 15 days to come claim the items before Residence Life disposes of the left behind items.
Residence Life and Buffalo State University DO NOT hold items for students. Anything left behind after noon on Friday, May 16, even if the student has not formally checked out, will be removed from the room and considered abandoned.
Returning Keys
Keys must be returned in order to avoid lock change fees. If you do not turn in your key(s) you will be charged for a lock change. Lock changes are $75 for the core replacement and $10 for each additional key. This means:
- Bengal, Neumann and Towers: $75.00 + 3 keys: $105.00
- Moore Complex: Suite: $75.00 + 5 keys $125.00; Room: $75 + 3 keys $105.00
- STAC: $75.00 + 2 keys $95.00
Leaving keys in your room, with a roommate or anywhere other than turning them into the staff at the front desk will result in a lock change fee.
Damage to University Property
Students will be billed for damages that are beyond normal wear and tear after the rooms have been inspected. Students will not be billed for damage if a work order for the damage was placed within a week of their move-in to that specific room.
All residents assigned to the room or space will be charged for the damage unless someone comes forward and claims responsibility for the damage. In order to claim responsibility for damage, the student should email reslife@buffalostate.edu and state exactly what damage they are taking responsibility of.
Desk Hours During CEP Week
The front desks of the building will be open from 8:00 AM until Midnight Monday to Friday during CEP week. If a student needs to check out outside of these hours, they need to call the RA on call for their community.
Resources for Move Out
Students will need to supply their own move-out supplies. However, there will be the following items available at the residence hall desks to assist with move out:
- Carts that can assist move items up and down stairs
- Carts that can help move items from rooms to cars
- Trash bags to throw away items no longer wanted or trash
There will not be moving assistance. Students are encouraged to work with friends or family to move items out of the residence halls.
24 Hour Quiet Hours
Starting on May 5, 2025, quiet hours will be 24 hours a day, every day until the residence halls close. Students who violate quiet hours during this time, may be asked to move-out of the residence halls immediately.
Guest Restriction During CEP Week
Starting on Friday, May 9, 2025, guests, except those who are actively assisting with your move-out, are not permitted. This includes inviting guests into each other’s apartments, suites or rooms. Students who are found to be hosting guests, outside of actively moving items out of your room, may be asked to move-out of the residence halls immediately.
Summer Housing
If you have signed up for summer housing, information on how to move from your current room to your summer room will be emailed to your Buffalo State University email at the beginning of CEP week.

Last Bit of Advice
Moving Out of the Residence Halls is not something that can be done at the last minute. Begin planning now and begin taking unnecessary items home with you. If you have questions about move-out, you are welcome to speak with your Resident Assistant, Complex Director or you can email us at reslife@buffalostate.edu.
